Yellow - the color of spirit & light. Each layer radiating out from the body is atmospheric distance. Spirit exists with space, bringing light to spiral into womb space, allowing light to plant itself on ground. Brighter space is protected by mother principles, while the weight of surrounding space weaves its intrusive way into the body. Red being flesh - orange, the synthesis of flesh & spirit. The head brings union of feminine & masculine principles, resulting in the spirit of union (3) extending outward toward expansion.

The desire for movement & migration is innate in people. It is through our exploration & journeys in the world that we develop our unique ways of being. It is yet another interplay between internal & external - for just as we may journey in the physical world, we also embark on emotional, mental or spiritual quests. These endeavors are the catalysts for significant change & often fill us with new appreciations for life.

Appreciation for mirroring between micro & macro in the universe. The infinite complexity of our bodies & minds so well echos the universe that made them. Be it an atom, cell, body system or solar system - the design is magnificent.

begging for mortality to witness the cycles, She shields , but many faces outward, inevitably standing in the Womb. One face is emerging from the spiral under the foot of (bone) regeneration , entering heart-space which reaches upward toward the axis point . The other face is in departure , under the foot of life , to re-turn the cycle.
Hands offer support to our process

Transitional spaces grant us change, buoyancy holds us throughout the challenges of adaptation. The greater forces at work support each lifetime, allowing them to be a mosaic of experiences, emotions & thoughts. Birth & death - as we rely upon our mothers to bring us into the physical world, the universe brings us to our experiences of humanness.
"Just to be held by the ocean
is the best luck we could have.
It is a total waking up.
Why should we grieve that we have been sleeping?
It does not matter how long we have been unconscious.
We are groggy, but let the guilt go.
Feel the motions of tenderness around you.
the buoyancy."

Oil and paper on canvas - 2017. 48" x 36"
This is the twisting of the body and it's memories, relationship with the shadow-self. The texture of this work is thick & diverse - many layers of paint and rice paper cover the canvas. It evolved over many years and took many color palettes before settling on one, but bares many marks from this process of experimentation. This speaks to the theme of the work - the relationship between body & memory.

2015 - mixed media (graphite and colored pencil) 14" x 18"
The experience of being held within skin and how we express our humanity through it. Sensations of skin can be powerful in moments of full awareness (touching, burns, injury, etc.) but is also an unconscious undercurrent of our waking lives. Just as many of our physiological systems, flesh often operates unnoticed.
In another relationship to skin, it has, nearly globally, come to carry heavy associations that do not belong to such an aspect of our being. Those of worth, character & humanity . As our species struggles to reckon with poisonous ideologies surrounding skin, my hope is that we can see the lessons offered by that which contains us .

2015 - oil pastel on canvas board 22"x 28"
The warm, vivifying experience of being boundless in thought, feeling & self-expression. The concept of freedom is multi-faceted and meaning can differ from person to person. Some are acutely aware of their lacking & deep yearning for a lifting of an oppressive force, while others may be ignorant to the many liberties they are privileged to have.
This work is less about the physical manifestations of liberation and is instead a tribute to freedom of spirit, with it's wild and bountiful nature.
